Choose the right logic tool

Use navigation for routing, variables for stored values, and calculations for totals. Combining them is easier when each has one clear purpose.

Steps

  1. Write a small flow: which answer changes the next question, which value changes, and what result should be shown.
  2. Create the needed variables under Customize using data, then save them before referring to them in rules.
A Number variable stores a starting value. Saved calculation rules determine how answers change it.
  3. Add conditions and actions in Branching & Calculations. Keep unrelated rules separate and name variables clearly.
Read the condition and destination together. This example was canceled; it does not demonstrate a saved or executed rule.
  4. Use the map to inspect the route, then preview matching and nonmatching answers to check the actual behavior.
Use zoom to inspect individual routes. A map connection alone does not prove the rule is correct.
  5. Confirm the final response and score using synthetic data before using the design with respondents.

Check before you rely on it

A navigation rule does not automatically create a score. A variable does not automatically change unless a configured action updates it.

If you need help

Test boundary values, backwards navigation, and a missing hidden field. These cases often reveal gaps that a single happy path misses.

Contact support with the relevant screen, time, and a redacted description. Keep credentials and private respondent information out of screenshots.
