Understand form variables

Variables hold values that can change while someone answers a form. Use a Number variable for a score or amount and a Text variable for a label.

Steps

  1. Open Design → Logic → Customize using data → Variables. Inspect the default score and price variables before adding your own.
In Design, open Logic → Customize using data to find Hidden Fields and Variables.
  2. Choose + Add new variable for a separate value, give it a distinct name, and select Number or Text. Set a meaningful initial value.
A Number variable stores a starting value. Saved calculation rules determine how answers change it.
The synthetic segment starts as unassigned. Use a saved text rule to assign a respondent group.
  3. Use Branching & Calculations to change the value when the appropriate answer condition matches. Save the variables and rules in their own dialogs.
  4. Reopen the form and check the initial value, then preview a short answer path before using the variable in a result or redirect.

Check before you rely on it

A variable name identifies the field; its current value is what a calculation or recall expression uses. Keep personal data out of variable names.

If you need help

Changing a value in the editor sets the starting value; it does not itself define an answer-dependent calculation.

Contact support with the relevant screen, time, and a redacted description. Keep credentials and private respondent information out of screenshots.
