Steps

  1. Add a Matrix question and enter clear row items and column choices.
Example rows and columns. Preview is a layout check; saved answers, attachments, and completion require separate tests.
  2. Open Question options and choose whether Multiple Selections is appropriate. Leave it off when each row needs one answer.
Current matrix options from a synthetic development form. Review the controls offered for your selected question.
  3. Set Mark Optional and preview complete, partially answered, and blank matrices.
Long labels wrap on a narrow screen. Shorten labels or split the task when the grid becomes difficult to read.
  4. Inspect a synthetic response to confirm answers remain associated with the correct row and column.

Check before you rely on it

Use consistent scale direction and short labels. Break a large matrix into simpler questions when mobile readability suffers.

If you need help

Check validation for every required row rather than testing only the first row.

Contact support with the relevant screen, time, and a redacted description. Keep credentials and private respondent information out of screenshots.
