Label respondent groups with text variables

Use a text variable for a segment such as a product interest or experience level. It is a label, not an access-control mechanism.

Steps

  1. List the allowed segment labels and the answer conditions that assign each one.
  2. Create a Text variable in Logic → Customize using data → Variables, with a neutral initial value such as unassigned. Save it.
The synthetic segment starts as unassigned. Use a saved text rule to assign a respondent group.
  3. In Branching & Calculations, add the relevant answer condition and a text action that updates the segment variable.
Define exclusive conditions and test which label remains after all matching rules. This example was canceled.
  4. Save logic and test one answer path per label, plus a path that remains unassigned.
  5. Check the segment in your intended recall or response workflow before using it for follow-up.

Check before you rely on it

Use a small, stable vocabulary. Avoid putting sensitive personal details into segment labels or destination URLs.

If you need help

If several rules can overwrite the label, make the conditions exclusive or test the intended final assignment explicitly.

Contact support with the relevant screen, time, and a redacted description. Keep credentials and private respondent information out of screenshots.
